I took 4 days off from my practice schedule this past weekend but for a great reason. I was being inducted into my high schools athletic hall of fame. It was an honor to be inducted before I attended and became an even bigger honor when I got to see the accomplishments of some of the previous athletes that my school produced. For a small town and a high school that routinely only has 600 students total, it was amazing to see the high level of accomplishments some of our athletes have achieved. We've had World Series champions, commissioners of major sport leagues and college conferences, and professionals in most of the major sports.
The golf tradition at my school has always been very good, even if the golf team was relatively quite in terms of support. I learned that the golf team has been a perennial contender for the county title and usually up there for state consideration. The golf team has won the Group II state title numerous times (groups are based on school size). I was proud to help lead my teams to 2 of those titles in '96 and '97. What was amazing to learn was my '97 team was the first and only team the school has had to win the Group and Overall State titles in the same year. I also learned that I am the only individual state champion and state player of the year award winner in the programs history.
It was a great night to celebrate these accomplishments with the other inductees' and to catch up with some of my team mates/class mates that I haven't seen in 20 years. The real highlight of the night was seeing my golf coach again, along with one of my absolute favorite teachers again. Its amazing how you can pick right up where you left off with people you love even if you haven't seen them in decades. I'm excited to be able to stay in contact with all these friends and mentors going forward.
Now that I'm back in Ponte Vedra, its time to get back to work on this journey to Winged Foot. I've got extra motivation now because I know if I can make there, I will have a bunch of support from my old home town! I'm going to have to hit the fitness routine hard this week because I gained 3.5 lbs over the weekend (thanks for feeding me mom). I wanted to make to Winged Foot to prove to myself I still have a game capable of competing at a high level, but now I want to make to Winged Foot to continue the legacy of HoVal Athletics and be an inspiration to my kids and students.
It's time to work, so until
tomorrow... KEEP IT IN THE SHORT GRASS!
